Use the DOD Architecture Framework (DoDAF) when a program needs a shared, auditable description of operational needs, systems, data, standards, and schedules that acquisition, engineering, and operations can all trace against. The practical way to adopt DoDAF 2.02 is to treat it as a data model with viewpoints on top, not as a set of diagrams. In production, that means storing architecture elements in a queryable database, enforcing relationship rules, and generating views from the data.
Most teams get this backwards. They draw OV-1 and SV-1 in a diagramming tool, export PDFs for a milestone review, and watch the artifacts drift from reality within a quarter. The official DoDAF 2.02 document and the DoD CI
